A 61-year-old man with plasma cell leukemia was treated with thalidomide, lovastatin and dexamethasone. Lovastatin was added to the usual thalidomide/dexamethasone regimen after obtaining the results of short-term culture, which revealed that thalidomide/lovastatin produced a higher rate of apoptosis, compared with apoptosis induced by each drug alone. Thirty-six months after the beginning of the therapy, the patient is still in complete hematologic remission.
